In the first week, I spent a couple of days in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, trying out the metro system and then came back to MRSM Tun Ghazali Shafie. My partner and I were told to start thinking of ideas for a mural at the school as a project like thing. In the first week, I tried out the cafe for the first time as well as the food at the kiosk presented by the PUM, the entrepreneurs club.
In the second week, I went into the Kuala Lipis old town where one of the teachers gave us a tour around its culture. I also went to the new town to try the ‘Hipster Cafe’. I spent the Saturdays breakfast in China town before I explored the area to find the mosque, where all the boys go every Friday for prayer.
The ninth of September is a public holiday in my area known as the ‘King’s Birthday’ which unfortunately doesn’t have parades but it does mean that I have an extra day off extending on to my weekend. For today, I have decided to head off into the office and do some lesson planning on how to create a story by giving the students some basic ideas on characters and the opening line. I also decided to start making posters, which will have to be approved first by Madame Principal, for clubs that my PT partner and I have decided to help run and restart.
In the third week, due to the students of every form group either revising for upcoming tests or those who have trials, these are the same as mock exams 20 or so days before the actual exam, I have no classes to teach today. This results in me sitting in the office creating possible lesson plans; I have noticed that the most uncommon section of English that I need to work the most on is both grammar and prepositions. This is because in the Malay language, they just don’t use prepositions so I have to find away to teach them these fundamentals whilst still making the subject enjoyable which I’m finding a bit of a struggle.
In the final week of September, I experienced a work day where I do not teach any classes; once every two weeks on the Thursday, I have no classes. Due to this spare time, I have decided to finish working on the spelling bee definitions for all form groups aside Form 5s as they are studying for their final exams.
Good stuff!
